Dear friends, several of you have asked if I had planned to do a calendar this year and whether the Band of Brothers is planning another kids’ charity project. A few months ago, I would have answered probably not, especially the calendar. But considering the awful year, so many people have experienced due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it imperative that we do all we can to bring some sunshine into as many lives as we can this Christmas season.
What drives this project?
Many of you are familiar with the Apostle Paul’s “love” chapter in 1 Corinthians 13. You might not remember the scripture number, but I’m sure you have heard some of the passages:
I have heard this passage read at more than one wedding. Paul opens the next chapter with “Pursue love.” That is what drives us, love for our neighbors, love for kids, and especially love for the disadvantaged or those suffering.
Several of you have helped us pursue love in past years as we have collectively helped hundreds of families and children that were in need or struggling to recover from calamities such as flash floods. This year, due to the pandemic’s ravages and the darkness it has wrought, the need to pursue love and help the most vulnerable has skyrocketed. There is no way that as a group, the Band of Brothers can sit idly by and do nothing. We must pursue love. We hope many of you will join us again.
While we will still try to help a few local kids’ charitable activities, e.g., a Christmas Store for needy kids and a Prison Tree Angel Program as in past years, our primary focus will be on the most vulnerable of our neighbors, our senior citizens living in nursing homes. We have all had a difficult time this past year. We can think of few people who are in need of an expression of love at this moment than those beautiful souls in nursing homes. We have been told residents not only fear this insidious virus that sadly has taken way too many of them, but loneliness and sadness pervade as many feel abandoned. I have been told stories that would bring tears to your eyes.
We have talked to staff in a couple of nursing home facilities so far, and the response regarding what we would like to do has been amazing. They are so excited that we plan to help bring a little ray of sunshine into their residents’ lives. We don’t know how many nursing homes we will be able to help. But we are going to try to do as many as we can. One of the facilities that will definitely receive help is the West Virginia Veterans Nursing Home in Clarksburg. Their staff and we are excited that we can bring some joy to those magnificent heroes.
Help Us Meet The Challenge
Friends, we have a HUGE task ahead of us as we raise our money by selling a West Virginia Scenic calendar and via donations. In the past, when we had access to people, they were amazingly generous. Access to folks is almost nonexistent this year! The pandemic has cancelled most of our regular sales avenues. So, we are going to have to rely on social media, word of mouth, and the kindness of those who want to help. We call this initiative, “Yes, I Can.” If you want to “Help us help kids from 1 to 92.”
The calendars are $15 each as in past years. You will note the sunburst on the cover. You and I get to see beautiful sunsets like this all the time. I chose this photo as it captures the kind of light that we want to shine in on as many nursing homes as possible. With your help, we will. We can mail calendars anywhere. We just add on the mailing costs. In the past, they have gone to Australia, Canada, Europe, and South America. God bless, and thank you.

The Christmas Project For Families
Help Us Help Kids is a Christmas project conducted by a Band of Brothers comprised of Christian men from various churches across Upshur County. The goal is to make the Christmas and New Year’s season much brighter for underprivileged children and their parents, especially families and kids who have been hit extremely hard by the pandemic. This is the fifth year for this initiative. Due to the terrible economic impact of the virus on families, this year’s project takes on even greater importance.
How We Raise Money For Projects
We raise our money through the sale of a West Virginia Scenic calendar and via donations. Thanks to the generosity of hundreds of people, we have been able to help kids locally, statewide, and internationally. We pray that once again, people will want to assist us in our Kingdom work.
The Past Four Years Of Serving
In the past four years, we helped disadvantaged families as well as numerous flood victims in eight WV counties. We have yet to decide where our major focus will be. We hope to have that identified by mid-October. We also have a number of targeted kids groups that we try to help each year, such as the Christmas Store for needy kids, Prison Angel Tree, Addiction Recovery program, school backpack programs, Parish House, and many more. We will soon revisit where we can make the most significant impact as the virus has some programs on hold. We will do that over the next month and will communicate our target areas of need as soon as we can.
